Haloperidol
A
Therapeutic class: Antipsychotic
Indication: Schizophrenia, mania, aggressive behavior, agitation
Action: Inhibits the effects of dopamine
Nursing Considerations:
● Monitor for extrapyramidal side effects - tremors, slurred speech/movement
● Tardive dyskinesia - repeat involuntary movements
● Neuroleptic malignant syndrome - similar to serotonin syndrome; high fever + muscular rigidity, altered mental status, autonomic dysfunction
● Can prolong the QT interval
○ Weekly EKG
● Contraindicated in pregnancy
