Haloperidol

A

Therapeutic class: Antipsychotic

Indication: Schizophrenia, mania, aggressive behavior, agitation

Action: Inhibits the effects of dopamine

Nursing Considerations:
Monitor for extrapyramidal side effects - tremors, slurred speech/movement
Tardive dyskinesia - repeat involuntary movements
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome - similar to serotonin syndrome; high fever + muscular rigidity, altered mental status, autonomic dysfunction
Can prolong the QT interval
○ Weekly EKG
● Contraindicated in pregnancy
