Prasugrel dosage form?
oral tablet
Prasugrel indication?
prevention of thromboembolism after percutaneous coronary intervention (in combination with ASA)
Prasugrel MOA?
Prasugrel is an inhibitor of platelet activation and aggregation through the irreversible binding of its active metabolite to the P2Y12 class of ADP receptors on platelets.
Prasugrel contraindication?
Active bleeding, history of transient ischemic attack or stroke
Prasugrel ADR?
Common: None
Less Common: HTN, hyperlipidemia, backache, headache, epistaxis (nosebleed)
Serious: atrial fibrillation, colon cancer, major bleeding, TTP (blood disorder that results in blood clots forming in the small blood vessels throughout the body), angioedema
Prasugrel Monitoring:
efficacy: stent patency and prevention if clotting
toxicity: Monitor for signs and symptoms of bleeding. Consider periodic hematocrit/hemoglobin, as well as platelet function testing.
Prasugrel key patient counseling point?
may be taken with or without food; tablets can be crushed but should not be split for purpose for dividing doses
**early d/c can lead to increased risk of subsequent CV events, pt weighs under 60 kg, consider 5 mg po qd due to increased risk of bleeding
