Antiphospholipid Syndrome
A
= acquired disorder characterised by predisposition to both venous and arterial thromboses, recurrent fetal loss and thrombocytopenia
May occur as primary disorder or secondary to other conditions, most commonly SLE

Antiphospholipid Syndrome - Cx in Pregnancy
A
- Recurrent miscarriage
- IUGR
- Pre-eclampsia
- Placental abruption
- Pre-term delivery
- VTE
NB Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are present in 15% of women w recurrent miscarriage

Antiphospholipid Syndrome - Mx in Pregnancy
A
Mx:
- Low dose Aspirin once pregnancy confirmed on urine testing
- LMWH once foetal heart is seen on US
- Usually discontinued at 34 weeks gestation
- These interventions increase live birth rate seven fold
