Antiparasitic Drugs Flashcards
Antiparasitic Drugs
Estimated that half of the world’s population is chronically infected with parasites
2 main categories
Unicellular protozoa
Multicellular helminthes
Protozoa have many subgroups
Presented as primarily intestinal or extraintestinal
Helminthes
Nematodes (roundworms)
Trematodes (flukes)
Cestodes (tapeworms)
Two other organisms susceptible to antiparasitics Pneumocystis jirovecii (technically a fungus) Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies mite; technically an Arachnid)
Drugs range from
Everyday antibacterials- metronidazole, doxycycline
Mildly exciting agents (chloroquine, pentamidine)
Most exotic agents only available from CDC- diethylcarbamazine, sodium stibogluconate)
Plasmodium (malaria)
