liver dysfunction, elevated transaminase levels, pregnancy category x,

lower LDL cholesterol as well as triglycerides. It also raises HDL componenet
Antilipemics dosing
once daily usually w/ evening meal or at bedtime
Atorvastatin (lipitor) advantage
can be dosed any time of day
how long does treatment continue for statins?
Lifelong: LDL levels will return w/i weeks to months
SE of statins
Increasede bone formation (reduce risk of osteoporosis) reduce risk of CV events
Potential uses for statins
Diabetes, CVD, MI therapy
SE of statins
well tolerated and SE uncommon. Some pt. have headache, rash or GI disturbance
Seriouse AE of statins
hepatotoxicity and myopathy
Tests to perform w/ statins
Liver function test before treatment and q6-12 months after that.
Lipitor and Zocor drug interaction
CYP3A4 will raise levels of statin (erythromycin and antifungals like ketoconazole)
contraindication Lipitor
significant renal impairment
