AntiHYPOtensive agents Flashcards
What is the ACTION of hypotensive agents?
- stimulate all adrenergic receptors/ SNS
- Heart rate and myocardial contractility increases
- blood vessels constrict and BP increase
- bronchi dilate and rate/depth of breathing increases
What are antihypotensive agents?
VASOPRESSORS
sympathomimetics
sympathetic adrenergic agonists
alpha and beta adrenergic agonists
CONTRINDICATIONS / CAUTIONS
antihypotensive agents
Do not take if allergic
If you have:
tachyarrhythmias / ventricular fibrillation
hypovolemia (decrease volume of circulating blood in body)
phenochromocytoma (type of neuroendocrine tumor)
Reason / indication for taking Antihypotensive agents
HYPOTENSIVE STATES ---shock ---heart failure ANAPHYLAXIS BRONCHOSPASM ASTHMA
Name some hypotensive meds
Dopamine and Dobutamine
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
(IV MEDS)
Antihypotensive meds
DRUG DRUG interaction
anything like caffeine
(Ma huang / guarana /caffeine)
cold medicine
Antihypotensive CARDIOVASCULAR
Adverse effects
arrhythmias hypertension angina SOB dyspena
Antihypotensive agents GI
adverse effects
nausea, vomiting, constipation (due to depressant effect on GI tract)
Antihypotensive CNS
adverse effects
headache, sweating, anxiety, piloerection (hairs stand up) this is related to sympathetic stimulation
Antihypotensive adverse effect
HYPOKALEMIA
(low potassium)
this is because aldosterone is released
HYPOTENSION definition
when heart muscle is damaged and unable to pump effectively
happens with severe blood/fluid loss
when there is extreme stress and the body’s levels of norepinephrine are depleted, leaving the body unable to respond to stimuli to raise blood pressure
