Antigen Determinant Flashcards
Revision
Ag Determinants
Antigenic determinants, also known as epitopes, are specific regions on the surface of an antigen that are recognized and bound by antibodies or T-cell receptors.
Each antigen can have multiple epitopes, allowing the immune system to target it in different ways.
3 Ag Determinant
Isotype
Idiotype
Allotype
Isotype
Isotypes determine the functional properties of the antibody and its role in the immune response.
The five main isotypes in humans are:
IgG
IgA
IgM
IgE
IgD
Each isotype has a unique role in the immune system, such as neutralizing pathogens, activating complement, or mediating allergic reactions.
Idiotype`
These unique determinants (epitopes) define the antibody’s ability to recognize and bind to a specific antigen. The idiotype is different for each antibody, even if the antibodies belong to the same isotype.
