antifungal drugs Flashcards
What are the indication for Anti-Fungal Meds?
To treat fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, candidiasis (thrush), serious systemic infections such as cryptococcoal meningitis
What are the 3 classes of Antifungals
Polyene, Pyrimidine, and Azole Intravenous
What is an example of a drug from Polyene?
Amphotericin B (Generic) and Fungizone (Brand) - Normally given in IV or Oral solution
What is an example of Pyrimidine?
Flucytosine (Generic) and Ancoban ( Brand) Oral tablet
What is an example of Azole Intravenous?
Fluconazole (generic) and Diflucan (brand) - oral tablet & oral suspension
Method of action for Azole?
Interfere with the biosynthesis of ergosterol, which is essential for fungal cell membranes and impairs their growth
Method of action for Polyene?
It binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, causing them to become permeable or leaky..
Method of action for Pyrimadine/ Flucytosine?
Inhibits the dna and rna synthesis in the pathogen
What are the side effects of anti-fungal drugs?
Anaphylaxis, hives, itching, swelling, breathing/ swallowing problems, sudden drop in BP, diarrhea, abdominla pain
