Antidiarrheals+Laxatives Flashcards
Loperamide
Opioids, antidiarrheals, block opioid receptors to decrease bowel motility, decrease secretions, and increase fluid absorption
Bismuth Subsalicylate
antidiarrheal, mops up bacterial/toxin in the GI system by sticking to the drug molecule
Atropine
anticholinergics, antidiarrheal, antagonist of ACh , slows down motility
Methylcellulose
laxative, bulk forming, mop up liquid in GI to add bulk, absorbs water in lumen
Lacutose (hyperosmotic compounds)+ Magnesium hydroxide (Salines)
osmotic laxative, draw water into intestinal lumen, increasing fecal water content
Docusate sodium
fecal softener, laxative, promote water and fat in stools to lubricate the fecal matter
Senna
Stimulant laxative, increase peristalsis via nerve stimulation
