Antidepressants Flashcards
SSRI treatments
- depression
- OCD
- panic disorders
- anxiety
- eating disorders
SSRI drugs
- fluoxetine
- paroxetine
- sertraline (also DA reuptake inhibitor)
- citalopram
- venlafaxine
General properties of SSRIs
block reuptake of serotonin
more specific, less side effects than TCAs
high therapeutic index
taper to prevent withdrawal sx
SEROTONIN SYNDROME: (SSRI+MAOI or fenfleuramine)
fluoxetine
fluoxetine: Prozac SSRI - inhibits CYP2D6, 3A4 - possible suicide in children - shorter duration, withdrawal sx more likely (dizziness) - akathisia
sertraline
sertraline: Zoloft
SSRI + DA reuptake inhibitor
paroxetine
paroxetine: Paxil
SSRI
inhibits CYP2D6
SNRIs
- venlafaxine
- duloxetine
venlafaxine
venlafaxine: Effexor
SNRI
-shorter duration, withdrawal sx more likely (dizziness)
duloxetine
duloxetine: Cymbalta
SNRI
Adverse effects of SSRIs
- HEADACHE
- GI UPSET, nausea, wt loss
- SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
- CNS stimulation: anxiety, insomnia, agitation
- akathisia (esp. fluoxetine)
Conditions SNRIs can treat
- depression
- pain disorders: neuropathies, fibromyalgia
- anxiety
- stress urinary incontinence
trazodone
trazodone: Desyrel
-weak serotonin reuptake inhibitor
-serotonin receptor antagonist
(some alpha-1, H1 block NO MUSCARINIC BLOCK)
side effects: SEDATION, orthostatic hypotension, nausea, dizziness
