1) wash hands
2) insert lancet into device
3) insert strip into monitor
4) stick side of finger
5) allow blood to wick into strip
6) apply pressure with cotton ball
7) record reading with date and time
8) put lancet in hazard waste container
what should you do if pt can’t get enough blood?
- make sure hands are warm
- hold hands below heart
how often should diabetics check feet?
daily- difficulty fighting infection and can lose feeling in hands and feet
should diabetics wear shoes?
always! make sure they fit properly
-also keep feet warm and dry
what are components of diabetic exam?
1) inspect all surfaces
2) pulses (dorsalis pedis or posterior tibial)
3) monofilament and vibration
4) reflexes of ankle
who can be used for dietary teaching?
-dietician or diabetic educator

what are starches found in
a. vegetables like peas, corn, lima beans & potatoes
b. Dried beans, lentils, kidney beans, pinto beans
c. Grains like oats, barley, rice and wheatͶthis group includes pasta, bread and crackers

natural sugars are found in milk and fruit; added sugars include processed sugar, corn
syrup, etc.
what is fiber found in
in plant based foods. A healthy diet for adults includes 25 - 30 grams of fiber

a. There is fiber in beans and legumes (kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, etc.).
b. Fruits and vegetable (think crunchy foods like apples, celery and broccoli)
c. Nuts: peanuts, walnuts and almonds
d. Whole grain products: whole wheat pasta, bread; whole grain cereals
