Anticholinergic (Parasympatholytic) Bronchodilators Flashcards
• Anticholinergic bronchodilator
Agent that blocks parasympathetic nervous fibers and muscarinic receptors from being stimulated, allowing relaxation of smooth muscle in the airway.
• Anticholinergic agents given by inhalation are a second class of bronchodilating agents.
• Anticholinergic agents, also known as muscarinic antagonists, are often separated in to short-acting muscarinic antagonists (SAMAs) and long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs).
-Anticholinergic Effects:
• Urinary retention
• Anticholinergic Side effects:
• Dry mouth (most common)
• When administered SVN: in addition to dry mouth…pharyngitis, dyspnea, flulike symptoms, bronchitis, upper respiratory infection
