Antibodies Flashcards
What are antibodies?
They are proteins which are produced in response to a specific antigen. Also called immunoglobulins. Provide defence against extracellular microbes iebacteria, viruses.
What is the function of antibodies?
- Neutralise pathogens and toxins
2. Stimulate other immune components - complement, natural killer cells, mast cells.
What are the 5 antibody classes?
IgA- second most common.Found in breast milk, saliva, tears.
IgD - low concentration in blood
iGe- associated with allergic reactions and parasitic infections
IgG - Most common. Crosses placenta
IgM -
What is humoral immunity?
It is mediated by b-cells(B-lymphocytes).They produce antibodies and also produce a store of b cells which can react when exposed to a specific antigen at a later date.
