What are antibodies?

A

They are proteins which are produced in response to a specific antigen. Also called immunoglobulins. Provide defence against extracellular microbes iebacteria, viruses.

What is the function of antibodies?

A
  1. Neutralise pathogens and toxins

2. Stimulate other immune components - complement, natural killer cells, mast cells.

What are the 5 antibody classes?

A

IgA- second most common.Found in breast milk, saliva, tears.
IgD - low concentration in blood
iGe- associated with allergic reactions and parasitic infections
IgG - Most common. Crosses placenta

What is humoral immunity?

A

It is mediated by b-cells(B-lymphocytes).They produce antibodies and also produce a store of b cells which can react when exposed to a specific antigen at a later date.
