Antibiotics Flashcards
Beta-lactam antibiotic
Wide range of Gram+ and narrow range of Gram-
can be combined with what beta-lactamase inhibitor?
Amoxicillin
Beta-lactamase inhibitor = clavulanic acid
Beta-lactam antibiotic
Methicilin
Inhibits cell wall synthesis. Can cross blood-brain barrier
Cefuroxime
Beta-lactam antibiotic used to target mainly Gram+.
Benzylpenicillin (Penicillin G)
Broad-spectrum antibiotic.
30s inhibitor.
used to treat acne
Oxytetracycline
Macrolide. 50s inhibitor
Used to treat multiple infections: respiratory infections, syphillis, skin infections, chronic prostatitis.
effective only against dividing organisms.
will pass into breast milk and cross placental barrier.
Erythromycin
broad-spec. aminoglycoside antibiotic.
Inhibits RNA synthesis.
restricted to mycobacterial infections due to resistant strains emerging.
Rifampicin
Folate antagonist - inhibits DNA synthesis.
Used to treat UTIs, bronchitis
Trimethoprim
Sulfonamide drug. Competes with PABA inhibiting DNA synthesis.
Sulfamethoxazole
Inhibits cell wall synthesis.
reserved as “drug of last resort” against Listeria moncytogenes, Streptococcus pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, etc.
Vancomycin
Polymyxin antibiotic - phospholipid detergent.
used to treat infections due to sensitive strains of certain gram- bacilli, particularly Psuedomonas aeruginosa. Disrupts bacterial cell membrane
Colistin
Quinolone - inhibits DNA synthesis.
Broad-spectrum
Ciprofloxacin
Inhibits protein synthesis.
typically used in creams and eyedrops
Fusidic acid
