Antibiotics Flashcards
What are broad spectrum antibiotics
Affect many different bacteria
What are narrow spectrum antibiotics
Affect a specific bacteria
What are bactericidal antibiotics
Kill bacteria
What are bacteriostatic antibiotics
Prevent bacteria multiplying
How does Penicillin V work
Diffuses though Gram + bacteria cell wall and through porins in gram - bacteria cell wall. Binds to PBP enzyme to inhibit it and prevents cross links in the peptidoglycan call wall allowing water to flood the cell causing lysis
How does tetracycline work
Acts against Gram + and - bacteria and enters through diffusion and protein pumps
Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes preventing tRNA attaching
How does antibiotic resistance occur
Mutations make some bacteria immune to antibiotics allowing them to survive, meaning they reproduce and create a large population of immune individuals
How can a resistance gene be given from one bacteria to another
Conjugation
