Antibiotics Flashcards
How does natural selection cause resistant populations of bacteria to develop?
Antibiotics kills non resistant strains
which allows the resistant strains to survive and multiply
without competition
Why do some pathogens spread rapidly?
Pathogens mutates
therefore very few people are immune to the new pathogen
because their immune system would not recognise it
A new strain may spread rapidly. Explain why?
resistant pathogens survive
these reproduce
population of resistant pathogens increases
Explain how bacteria develop antibiotic resistant?
Some bacteria mutate (become resistant to antibiotic)
Antibiotic kills the non resistant strains
Resistant strains multiply
Each time antibiotics is used more resistant strains survive
Until the whole population of bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic
How can resistant strains to antibiotics be prevented?
Finish full course of antibiotics
Define the term mutation?
A change in a gene
