Antibiotics Flashcards

Q
Describe Aminoglycosides mode of action
A
Attaches to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacterial cells. Bacteria have 70S ribosomes (30S + 50S), while human cells have 80S ribosomes (40S + 60S). Aminoglycosides selectively target bacterial ribosomes. Gentamicin is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria rather than merely inhibiting their growth like bacteriostatic antibiotics.

Q
What do s a beta lactum antibiotic?
A
A beta lactum antibiotic is bactericidal. It binds to penicillin binding protein preventing the production of bacteria cell wall.
An example of this would be ampicillin?
