Antibiotics Flashcards
What are antibiotics and why are they useful( human - friendly)
chemicals which kill or inhibit growth of bacteria
They are useful because they target bacterial cells without damaging human body cells
Antibitoic resistance
- Caused by a genetic variation in a population of bacteria
1) if a bacterium is resistant to antibiotic, this means that it has a greater chance of surviving, so can live longer and reproduce inside of host cells
2) This eventually leads to an allele for antibiotic resistance to be passed onto potential offspring
what does the MRSA bacteria do
causes serious wound infections and is resistant to several antibiotics , including methicillin.
what does the clostridium difficile bacteria fo
It infects the digestive system.
Antibiotics kill harmless bacteria in the digestive system which c difficile is resistant to, allowing C difficile to flourish
C difficile produces a toxin which causes diarrhoea, fever and cramps.
NO GOOOD
what is one way of dealing with antibiotic- resistance bacteria
Developing new antibiotics and modifying existing ones.
- not easy though
