what was the difference between anti slavery and abolition?
anti slavery did want an end to the international slave trade and slavery in the US, but that didn’t mean racial equality or rights.
wheres abolitionists did want an immediate end to slavery and rights given to black Americans.
what views did gradualist movement have?
they wanted to gradually free the slaves, but wanted to move them back to Africa. they wanted a gradual and voluntary end to slavery.
the plan was to move the slaves to Liberia
what was immediatism?
more radical abolitionists who sought an immediate end to slavery. the leading figure of this movement was William Lloyd Garrison.
what where the American anti slavery society?
a groups of radical abolitionists led by William Lloyd garrison, the society was an umbrella group for other societies, but garrison managed to be the dominant figure through his newspaper the Liberator
what were the things that Garrison was calling for?
he called for an immediate end to slavery, and refusing to reimburse slave owners, and opposed the deporting of slaves to Africa.c
what was the commonalities between the temperance movement and abolition?
both shared a strong religious belief, and that slavery was sinful with their Job to rid the world of sin.
where was the abolition movement met with opposition?
there was obvious opposition from the south and southern law makers, but it was also unpopular with businessmen and those in rural areas.
what role did free blacks play in the abolition movement?
they made up much of the membership of these societies and to the liberator, the most famous of them being fredrick Douglass
how was slavery justified on religious grounds?
use the curse of ham as justification and slaves inherited this curse.
the bible doesn’t mention slavery in this so there is no need to intervene
how was slavery justified regarding history?
the argument that slavery had always been around, using examples of ancient greece. However the slavery in the US was about profit and racial inferiority not like in Greece.
how was racial inferiority used to justify slavery?
used the Pseudo science to claim African Americans had inferior brains. created stereotypes e,g that black people had to be taken care of by white people, to make it seem like slavery was good
how was the work argument used to justify slavery?
they emphased the poor working conditions of the free northern workers suggesting that work was not so free. compared to a stable slavery based economy.
how was the cotton trade used to justify slavery?
cotton was the staple of the southern economy and cotton and slavery would be needed to expand into the west. Argued it was crucial to progress and without slavery there would be no cotton.
