Diarrhea due to disruption of the normal flora
Bactricidal vs bacteriostatic?
cidal kiills bacteria, static inhibits replication and then the immune system destroys it
Gram negative vs gram positive?
Negative: do not stain, have extra polylipophilic layer and harder to kill
Penicillin G is used for what?
IV
Syphilis, it is mixed with Benzathine (a local anesthetic) but still IM and painful
What is Penicillin V? how does it work?
PO. first antibiotic
Arrests cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin binding proteins (bactericidal)
What does Penicillin V cover?
Gram positive
Some anaerobes
What should you remember with Penicillin V? (4 things)
Take on empty stomach
Take ATC
May cause rash & diarrhea
Renal elimination
What is the gram positive bug that is everywhere?
staphylococcus aureus
What was the gold standard for staph aureus?
Methicillin
What are the aminopenicillins?
Ampicillin
Amoxicillin
What do aminopenicillins cover?
Same as penicillin + gram negatives E. Coli & H. flu
Aminopenicillins used to treat what?
Uncomplicated UTI and Otitis media
How do you take the aminopenicillins?
Ampicillin on empty stomach
Amoxycillin has added OH group, which enhances absorption
Ampicillin has added coverage of what bugs?
- Enterococcus
- Listeria (newborn meningitis, food illnesses)
