anti-fungal drugs Flashcards
What two categories are fungi subdivided into?
Yeasts or moulds (filamentous fungi)
can be both
What are the four classes of antifungals?
Polyenes, Azoles, Allylamines, Echinocandins
What do polyenes bind to in the fungal cell wall resulting in increased permeability?
ergosterol
polyene
IV use
serious systematic fungal infection
extremely toxic
Amphotericin B
polyene
topical use only (creams for fungal skin infections, pessaries for vaginal candida infections, oral suspension)
Nystatin
What is fluconazole used to treat?
yeast infection
Voriconazole and itraconazole are azole antifungal drugs used to treat what?
Aspergillosis
How do the azoles and allylamines work?
they suppress ergosterol synthesis (they each act at a different stage of the pathway however)
What is Terbinafine used for?
Fungal infection of skin and nails
How to Echinocandins work?
They inhibit the synthesis of glucan polysaccharide
Caspofungin, Mycafungin and Anidulafungin are members of which class of antifungal drugs?
Echinocandins
What are Echinocandins used for?
Serious Candida and Aspergillus infections
