Anti-Epileptic Drugs Flashcards
0
Q
Generalized Seizures
A
- LOC
- Febrile seizures
- Tonic/Clonic seizures
1
Q
Partial Seizures
A
- No LOC
- Simple & complex
2
Q
Phenytoin
A
- Na+ channel blocker (prevent abnormal changes in ion conductance)
- Secondary Ca+2 channel blocker @ therapeutic doses
- Delays onset of neuron firing
3
Q
Phenytoin therapeutic uses:
A
- All generalized partial & tonic-clonic seizures
- DO NOT use for Juvenile Myoclonic Seizures
4
Q
Adverse side effects of Phenytoin:
A
- Gingival hyperplasia
- Hirsutism
5
Q
Oxcarbazepine
A
- Na+ channel blocker
- Preferred for children
- Delay onset of neuron firing
6
Q
Felbamate
A
- Glutamate receptor antagonist (block excitatory activity)
- Inhibits NMDA channel
- Binds to NR2B & NR1 subunits
- Delays recovery of desensitized NMDA channels
7
Q
Felbamate therapeutic use:
A
- Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome
2. In patients highly refractory to other drugs
8
Q
Gabapentin
A
- GABA regulating drug (increase inhibitory transmission by increasing GABA)
- Does not bind to GABA analog GABA-A receptor
9
Q
Tiagabine
A
- GABA regulating drug (increase inhibitory transmission by increasing GABA)
- Inhibits re uptake of GABA by GABA transporter (GAR-1)
10
Q
Vigabatrin
A
- GABA regulating drug (increase inhibitory transmission by increasing GABA)
- Inhibits metabolism of GABA by GABA transaminase ( GABA-T)
11
Q
Gabapentin therapeutic use:
A
- Neuropathic pain
- Migraine
- Not effective for controlling seizures
12
Q
Tiagabine therapeutic use:
A
-Contrils tonic-clonic seizures for kids <12 y.o.
13
Q
Vigabatrin therapeutic use:
A
-Infantile spasm & Refractory complex partial seizures not controlled by usual Tx
14
Q
Vigabatrin adverse side effects:
A
-Liver failure, psychotic disorder, SI & visual field defect
