Anti-Emetics Flashcards
What are the three main triggers for nausea and vomiting?
Gastroparesis
Motion sickness
Chemotherapy (CINV)
Name two other causes of nausea and vomiting
Pregnancy
Other higher functions
How does gastroparesis cause vomiting?
Poor gastric contraction leads to increased serotonin production (5HT3).
5HT3 binds to 5HT3Areceptors on dopaminergic afferent fibres which release dopamine at the vomiting centre. The dopamine binds to the D2R and induces vomiting.
What molecule is released during gastroparesis and which cells release it?
Serotonin, released by enterochromaffin cells (ECF)
What does the serotonin, released by the gut, bind to?
5HT3A receptors on dopaminergic neurones
Where do the dopaminergic neurones project to?
The vomiting centre (area postrema)
Where is the area postrema?
In the medulla
How does motion sickness cause nausea and vomiting?
Neural mismatch between the labyrinth and visual information activates
