Anti-Armor Terms Flashcards
What is an HE round?
High Explosive:
Used for anti-personnel and soft skinned targets. They lack capability to penetrate modern armor
What is HEAT round?
High Explosive Anti-Tank:
True anti armor threat. Designed under the Monroe effect principle charge. Highly lethal “jet” torch penetrates steel.
What is a HESH round?
High Explosive Smash Head:
Functions under the sledge-hammer principle. The steel nose impact will debilitate and crush the armor, the explosive charge will multiply the kinetic energy upon impact.
What is an FAE round?
Fuel Air Explosive:
Specifically designed to destroy light skinned vehicles and combat field fortifications. Releases gas into the air which it ignites creating a fireball explosion.
What is a Tandem Warhead?
Designed to counter ERA protection. Smaller charge penetrates the ERA block and the main charge follows through to penetrate main armor.
What are the types of warheads?
HE FAE HEAT HESH Tandem Thermabaric
What are the types of fuses?
Point Detonating (PD)
Base Detonating (BD)
Point Initiating Base Detonating (PIBD)
Point Detonating
Fuse is located in the nose. Can be either an impact or time fuse. Time fuse can be either electrical or mechanical
Base Detonating
The firing pin is located in the base of the round Explosive composition. The firing pin will strike the primer and the explosive train will begin.
Point initiating base Detonating
Fuse has 2 elements. One piezo crystal in the nose and a solenoid in the base. During impact the crystal creates 12-50V that excite the solenoid which releases the firing pin to initiate the explosive train.
Types of missile technology
MACLOS SACLOS ACLOS Top Attack Missile LOSAT
MACLOS: Manual Command Line of Sight
Initial guiding system for AT missiles. Consisted of a control box that utilized a joy stick.
SACLOS: Semi-Automatic Line of Sight
Second generation of missile guidance systems. The gunner operates the guide and tracking unit by keeping his sight on target. All commands are transmitted electronically to the missile I.e. TOW, Milan.
ACLOS: Automatic Line of Sight.
Third generation of guidance systems. Gunner aims at target and fires. Computer transmits data to missile which makes automatic flight path corrections.
Newest versions feature “fire and forget” I.e. Javelin.
Methods of Engagement
Single Firing
Sequence Firing
Pair Firing
