Disulfiram (antabuse) and Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol)
USE: prevent alcohol use for people with Alcohol Abuse and Dependence
MODE OF ACTION: Disulfiram in chibits alcohol metabolism, causing the accumulation of acetaldehyde and unpleasant reactions (nausea, vomiting, sweating, headach, tachycardia and hypotension) act to deter drinking.
Naltrexone: opiod receptor antagonist, blocks craving for and reinforcing effects of alcohol.
SIDE EFFECTS: disulfiram: drwosiness, depression, disoreintation, headache, restlessness, inpotence, blood dyscrasias.
Naltrexone: abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, nervousness, headache, and joint/muscle pain.
