Anterior triangle of the neck - banks Flashcards
Boundaries of the Anterior Triangle:
*Anterior boundary : median line of the neck
*Posterior boundary : anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle
*Superior boundary (base) : inferior border of the mandible
B. Subdivisions of the anterior triangle:
*For more precise localization of structures, the anterior cervical region is subdivided into four smaller triangles:
- Muscular Δ - anterior aspect below the hyoid bone
- contains the infrahyoid strap muscles. its the muscular entity? - Carotid Δ - whole lesson on this, come back to it. this is where u get ur external carotid arteries
- Submandibular Δ - between mandible and digastric bellies
- contains submandibular salivary gland, lingual and facial aa., CN XII - Submental Δ - a midline structure below the chin. when u think hard, u stroke chin, its the mental area.
- bounded by ant. digastric bellies and body of hyoid bone
extensive cutaneous area of anterior triangle is afforded by the transverse cervical nerve
anterior branch of retromandibular vein joins up with facial vein, also anterior jugular veins are here too.
external jugular on top of scm, anterior jugular between scm, internal jugular deep, behind to scm.
Contents: Muscles:
Infrahyoid muscles: Made of 2 superficial and 2 deeper muscles:
- two superficial muscles:
1. Omohyoid & 2. Sternohyoid - two deeper muscles:
3. Sternothyroid & 4. Thyrohyoid
Target for MC questions: odd one out:
Which nerves supply the infrahyoid muscles:
Anterior rami of C1, C2, C3 via cervical plexus and its ansa cervicalis (loop). this innervates Omohyoid, sternohyoid, sternothyroid.
*Thyrohyoid is innervated from C1 via CN XII
Contents: Muscles:
*Suprahyoid Muscles: 5 pairs of muscles originate above the hyoid bone.
1.) Posterior digastric
2.) Anterior Digastric
3.) Mylohyoid
4.) Geniohyoid:
5.) Stylohyoid:
Innervation of the suprahyoid muscles:
post. digastric / stylohyoid = cervical branch of facial.
ant. digastric / mylohyoid = mylohyoid nerve, branch of CN V (7 and 5)
ODD ONE OUT: geniohyoid = C1 nerve. travels with hypoglossal nerve.
