Q

Describe pituitary development

A

-Anterior and posterior glands develop from different tissues before joining together

-Protrusion of ectoderm from Rathke’s pouch grows upwards to form anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis)

-Posterior pituitary is neuronal (neurohypophysis) and is extension of neural components of hypothalamus

-2 tissues grow tightly apposed despite being different origins

Q

What can pituitary tumours cause?

A

-Pressure on local structures e.g. optic chiasm. Can result in bitemporal hemianopia

-Pressure on normal pituitary function; hypopituitary.

-Functioning tumour can result in Cushing’s disease, gigantism and prolactinoma.
