Anterior Compartment Of Thigh Flashcards
What are the muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh (8)
Psoas major, iliacus, rectus femoris, vastus medialis/lateralis/intermedius, sartorius and pectineus
What are they all innervated by (except one) and what’s the exception?
All innervated by the femoral nerve, except the psoas major which is innervated by the anterior rami of L1-3.
Origin of psoas major
Lumbar vertebrae
Origin of iliacus
Iliac fossa
Insertion of iliopsoas
Lesser trochanter
Action of iliopsoas
Flexion of thigh at hip joint
Origin of rectus femoris
AIIS and ilium
Insertion of rectus femoris
Patella via quadriceps tendon
Action of rectus femoris
Extension of knee joint and flexion of hip joint
Origin of 3 vastus muscles.
Lateralis= greater trochanter
Medialis= intertrochanteric line
Intermedius= anterior and lateral surfaces of femoral shaft
Insertion of vastus muscles
Patella via quadriceps tendon
Action of vastus muscles.
Extension of knee joint, secondary function of stabilising the patella
Origin of sartorius
ASIS
Insertion of sartorius
Superior, medial surface of tibia
Action of sartorius
Flexor, abductor and lateral rotator at hip joint. Flexor at knee joint.
