Anterior and Lateral Leg Flashcards
fascia of the thigh and leg superior to inferior
fascia lata (thigh)
crural fascia(leg)
Superior extensor retinaculum (ankle)
inferior extensor retinaculum (foot)
anterior compartment (medial to lateral) and function
tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, (fibularis tertius too)
-function = dorsiflexion and toe extension
tibialis anterior origin and insertion
on lateral tibial condyle, attaches medial surface first medial cuneiform and first metatarsal base
tibialis anterior function
dorsiflexion and inversion
extensor digitorum longus origin and insertion
lateral tibial condyle and anterior fibular surface and interosseous membrane
-insertion: 4 tendons of digits 2-5 form extensor expansion over dorsum
extensor digitorum longus function
extends lateral four digits
dorsiflexion
function of fibularis tertius
dorsiflexion and eversion
what does the fibularis tertius fuse with?
extensor digitorum longus proximally, tendon does not attach to a digit
extensor hallucis longus insertion
base distal phalanx of hallux
extensor hallucis longus function
extend hallux and dorsiflex ankle
nerve supply to the anterior compartement?
deep fibular nerve
what does the deep fibular nerve supply
Anterior compartment muscles, metacarpal phalangeal and ankle joint, dorsal instrinsic foot muslces, skin between first and second digits (Aunt maddie always sucks dick)
what landmark gives approximate point of division of anterior and posterior tibial arteries?
tibial tuberosity
anterior tibial artery route to ankle
passes anteriorly over interosseous membrane and goes anterior surface between TA and EHL with deep fibular nerve
ends at the ankle between malleoli = dorsalis pedis artery
muscles of lateral compatment
fibularis brevis and fibularis longus
where does fibularis longus insert?
runs obliquely and distally across sole of foot and attaches distally to first metatarsal and medial cuneifrom
fibularis longus function?
strong eversion and plantarflexion
fibularis brevis function?
if didn’t evert then?
eversion and plantarflexion
-constantly sprained ankle
where does fibularis brevis insert?
tuberosity of 5th metatarsal
what does the superficial fibular nerve in distal third of leg?
becomes superficial and supplies anteroinferior leg, dorsal surface foot and dorsal digits (DAD)
damage to common fibular nerve causes?
loss of dorsiflexion and eversion causes a foot drop.
can’t achieve heel strike, patient has high stepping gait. leg swings forward the foot strikes with a clop.
-loss of sensation along anterolateral leg and dorsum of foot
broken tibia can cause?
bleeding into compartment but can’t go anywhere bc you have tight fascia holding it in. this leads to intracompartmental pressure and can lead to ischemia and permanent injury. Fasciotomy can be performed to relieve pressure
shin splints form from?
microtrauma to tibialis anterior, inducing small tears to periosteum over tibia and or tears to overlying deep fascia.
-mild form of compartmental syndrome
