A
the separation of a normally sited placenta from the uterine wall

presentation of placental abruption?
A
- sudden onset, constant abdominal pain
- blood loss PV (unless concealed abruption)
- in 3rd trimester (32+ weeks)
- shock that doesn’t match the visible blood loss
- woody, hard uterus O/E

risk factors for placental abruption?
A
- pre-eclampsia
- cocaine use
- multiparity
- maternal trauma
- increasing maternal age
- prev placental abruption
