in the 11-13+6 week scan Nuchal Thickness is assessed
If It is thick more likely to have downs sydrome
triple test is done in second semester. B-hcg, AFP, and unconconjigated estriol are measured
High B-HCG and low estriol and low AFP= more likely to be downs
High AFP= Neural tube defect
All low= trsiomy 18, Edwards
If risk is over 1/250 then amniocentecis is offered. Although it has a miscarriage rate of 1%
