What are the 4 types of pregnancy care?
- Pre-conceptual care (care given right before pregnancy)
- Antenatal care (care given during the Antenatal period)
- Intrapartum care (Care given to a pregnant woman while she’s in labour)
- Postnatal care (Care given after birth right up to 6 weeks)
What is the purpose of antenatal care?
- Info giving
- Screening
- Risk assessment
- Management of symptoms
- Assess foetal growth and wellbeing
- Prepare for intrapatrum and postpartum period
Who provides antenatal care?
- Midwife = low risk
- Consultant = high risk
How many times should women be seen during the antenatal period?
- nulliparous - uncomplicated (10)
- parous - uncomplicated (7)
What areas should be assessed when first meeting with healthcare professional?
- Health dietary habits ( Folic acid, vitamin supplements, food hygiene, excercise…..)
- Lifestyle (eg. to quit smoking)
- Social risk assessment
- All antenatal screening including explanation (eg. risks, benefits, why they are done)
When should booking appt happen?
What happens at booking appt?
- By week 10
> Check gestational age
> Ultrasound for structural abnormalities
> Offer Down syndrome screening - Many tests
What happens at the 12/40 week scan?
Dating
Combined screening
Checking for multiple pregnancies and major abnormalities
When is the Trisomy(T21) screening done?
> Why?
- During dating scan
> Measure the Crown-Rump Length (CRL) if CRL>84mm, use head circumference
> “Combined Test” – Nuchal translucency on USS along with maternal serum HCG and PAPPA
- If > 13+6/40 or CRL >84mm, then quadruple test (maternal serum hCG, AFP, inhibin, uE3)
