Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
A test used to test hypotheses about differences between more than two means or groups. It examines how much groups vary from each other, and whether this is due to sampling error or difference.
Can have one way, between subjects (independent) or repeated measures.
F-ratio
The result of the ANOVA calculation. It is a comparison of between-group (treatment) variance to within-group (error) variance.
If the variance between groups is greater than within groups, then F is larger, and the results are more likely to be significant.
If within group is greater than between group variance, then F is smaller and the results are not significantly different.
f = t squared.
Post-hoc tests
Tests performed after significant results are achieved in an ANOVA that make comparisons between pairs of groups to one determine where the difference lies.
Repeated Measures ANOVA
An ANOVA in which the subjects are the same in each group. Allows for fewer participants, can better test the effect of time or repetition, and has a more sensitive design (more likely to reject null hypothesis) since some participant variance (error) is factored out in calculations.
