ankle sprain Flashcards
What is a lateral ankle sprain (LAS)?
an injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle, usually resulting from forced PF or inversion moment
what can be used to diagnose a LAS?
- palpation
- rom
- WB status
- anterior drawer test
- reverse anterolateral drawer test
acute LAS
full return to sport: largelly dependent on injury grade, patient and activity
-‘copers’ = recover:no
symptoms/limitations w/ months to years
CAI
recurrent ankle sprains
when symptoms of instability conitnue beyond 1 year after LAS
- Hx multiple sprains, self reported instability, sensorimotor impairmetns in the foot, ankle, knee hip
what % of ankle sprains does LAS account for?
40% of sports related injuries
- more common in women
- children, adolescents and athletes
- 7x higher. prevalence in court sports vs field sports
from the LAS CPG what were the findings?
- rehab of las injures
- reducing sensorimotor and ROM impairments
- decrease the risk of further injury
- prevent the development of chronic ankle instability (CAI)
what are some predictive tests that can be performed to assess risk of LAS?
- y balance
- multiple hip test
- single leg hip test (adolescents w/greater than 15.4 sec)
therapeutic exercies for LAS recovery include
- early mob and exercise improve outcomes
- exercise based interventions vs usual care
- proprioceptive and balance retraining
- protected active ROM
- stretching exercises
- neuromuscular training
- postural re-edu
- proprioceptive and balance reraining
- protected active ROM
- stretching exercises
- neuromuscular training
- postural re-edu
are considered what grade for LAS?
grade A
what exercises were considered grade A for CAI?
- propriopcetive and abalance retraining
- neuromuscualr training
