Ankle joint Flashcards
Also known as..
Talocrural joint (hinge)
Articulations between…
- the distal end of the tibia and it’s medial malleolus with the talus
- the lateral malleolus of the fibula with the talus
Supporting structures..
Medial (deltoid) ligament
- attached to the medial malleolus
- consists of 4 different ligaments attaching from the malleolus, to the talus, calcaneus and navicular bones
- prevents over-eversion of the foot
Supporting structures.. Lateral ligament(s) (3)
-Attached to lateral malleolus, resists over inversion of the foot
3 distinct separate ligaments:
1. Anterior talofibular - (lateral malleolus &lateral aspect of talus)
2. Posterior talofibular (spans between lateral malleolus & the posterior aspects of the talus)
3. Calcaneo fibular (spans netween the lateral malleolus & the calcaneous)
Movements (2main)
-Plantar flexion: (muscles in posterior compartment of the leg) - gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, tibialis posterior
- Dorsiflexion: (anterior compartment of the leg)
- tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus
Blood supply
receives blood from branches of the …
-anterior & posterior tibial arteries
Innervation (lumbar and sacral plexuses)
- Tibial nerve (main branch of sciatic nerve)
- Deep and superficial nerves (branches of the common fibular)
