Animals Flashcards
Aggressive behaviour
Physical act or threat by one individual against another, some territorial behaviour are also agressive behaviours.
E.g a dominant male baboon chasing off a subordinate male that got too close to a female
Territorial behaviour
Is carried out in defence of a specific area which is sued for the profusion of food or breeding purpose
E.g a group of magpies defending an area used for breeding purposes from other magpies
Submissive behaviours
This behaviour Is deigned to stop or reduce the intensity of the aggressive behaviour of another individual
E.g a young male dog rolling in its back in the presence of an older and stronger male dog
Reproductive behaviour
Behaviours carried out in the production and rearing of offspring.
Reproductive behaviours can be classed into several types.
E.g courtship behaviours; such as the display of colours and song shown by make lyre-birds to attract females.
Appetitive behaviours
This behaviour is one that leads indirectly to the satisfaction of a motivation
E.g approach food in order to satisfy hunger
Social and solitary behaviours
Social behaviour at those carried out by several individuals of the same species.
Solitary behaviours are those carried out by a single individual
Advantages of living in a social group
Greater protection from predators
Increased care of offspring and better access to mates
Greater ability to find food sources, and defend territories
Disadvantages of living in a social group
Increased competition for mates, food and nests.
Increase risk of infection and greater risk of injury
Some social species
Elephant heard led by an older dom female (matriarch)
Eastern grey kangaroo
Swarm of honey bees
Some solitary species
Koala
Tigers
Lions
Ruby tailed wasps
Visual communication
Based on sight e.g butterflies, gorilla stares
Vocal communication
Based on sound e.g gorilla chest beating, wolf pack calling
Chemical communication
Taste and sounds. Many animals produce chemicals that affect the behaviour of other individuals of the same species
E.g koals rub the tree with sent glands and vapour moths female cannot fly so it uses planar ones to attract the males
