Animals Flashcards
Types of symmetry in animals
Irregular, Radial, Bilateral
The 9 most common phyla (out of 35)
Porifera, Cnidaria, Nematoda, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Anthropoda, Echinodermata, Chordata
What are porifera?
Sessile, porous creatures (sponges)
What are cnidarians?
Aquatic animals with stinging cells (jellyfish)
What are nematodes?
Cylindrical, unsegmented worms (pinworm, whipworm, hookworm)
What are plathyhelminthes?
Flat, segmented, bilaterally symmetric worms (planaria, tapeworm or taenia)
What are annelids?
Segmented worms (leeches, earthworms)
What are mollusks?
Bilaterally symmetrical, soft-bodied animals with hard protective shells
What are the classes of mollusks?
Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda
What are arthropods?
Joint-legged animals with bodies segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen
What are the classes of arthropods?
Insecta, Arachnida, Crustacea
What are echinoderms?
Spiny-skinned marine animals that are radially symmetric
What are chordates?
animals with a notochord
What are the superclasses of chordates?
Agnatha (jawless fish), Gnathostomata (lobe-finned fish)
Four major types of animal tissue
Epithelial, Connective, Nervous, Muscle
