Animals Flashcards
What is amylase?
Enzyme that breaks down starch in the saliva and small intestine.
What connects the esophagus and stomach?
Lower esophageal sphincter
What connects stomach and small intestine?
Pyloric sphincter.
What is digested in the stomach? How?
Stomach acid activates pepsin, a type of protease (protein enzyme). Also has lipases.
Therefore stomach digests protein and lipids (fats).
What does the small intestine digest?
Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates.
How does the esophagus and small intestine move food?
Peristalsis.
What’s name of food chunks before stomach? After stomach?
Bolus before, chyme after.
What do hormones cause to happen once food hits the small intestine?
-Tells pancreas to secrete enzymes
-Stimulates liver to make bile
-Stimulates bicarbonate secretion to neutralize acid
What’s catabolism vs anabolism?
Catabolism is digestion- breaking down large molecules to make small ones and energy.
Anabolism creation of large molecules with small molecules and energy.
What’s an endotherm vs ectotherm?
Endotherm is warm blooded- uses energy to warm body passes through blood
Ectotherm is cold blooded- same body temperature as environment.
What’s an endotherm vs ectotherm?
Endotherm is warm blooded- uses energy to warm body passes through blood
Ectotherm is cold blooded- same body temperature as environment.
What’s tidal volume?
Amount of air breathed in and out during regular breathing.
What’s inspiratory/expiratory reserve volume.
Amount of air you can inhale/exhale past regular tidal volume.
Residual volume, vital capacity?
