ANIMAL TISSUES Flashcards
What are the 4 main categories of tissues?
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
What is the fuction of epithelial tissue?
Epithelial tissue covers the outside of the body and lines cavities and organs
What are the 3 shapes of epithelial cells?
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
- Squamous
What are the 3 arrangements of epithelial cells?
- Simple - single layer
- Stratified - multiple layers
- Pseudodtratified - single layer with cells of varying lengths
What is the function of connective tissue?
Connective tissue binds and supports other tissues
What are the 6 types of connective tissue?
- Adipose tissue
- Blood
- Cartilage
- Bone
- Fibrous connective tissue
- Loose connective tissue
What are the 3 types of fibers in connective tissue?
- Collagenous fibers - provide strength and flexibility
- Elastic fibers - stretch and snap back to original length
- Reticular fibers - join connective tissue to adjacent tissue
What is the function of muscle tissue?
Muscle tissue consists of long cells called muscle fibers which contract in response to nerve signals
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal muscle
- Smooth muscle
- Cardiac muscle
What is skeletal muscle?
Skeletal muscle is responsible for voluntary movement
Is striated, mononucleated with peripheral nuclei, and. has long, stap-like fibers
What is smooth muscle?
Smooth muscle is responsible for involuntary body activities
Has no striations and has a large, central nucleus
What is cardiac muscle?
Cardiac muscle is responsible for heart contractions
Is striated and has interclated discs which run perpendicular to muscle fibers
What is the function of nervous tissue?
Nervous tissue detects stimuli and transmits signals
What are the 2 components of nervous tissue?
- Neurons - cells which transmit nerve impulses
- Glial cells - cels which help nourish, insulate, and replenish neurons
