Animal tissues Flashcards
list five examples of organ systems
respiratory system circulatory system digestive system nervous system reproductive system
list three ways nerve cells communicate
synaptic terminals
acetylcholine
synapse
what is synaptic terminals
Synaptic Terminals are specialised endings
where chemical messages are passed on to the
other neurons or receptors (Muscles).
what is acetylcholine
ACH (Acetylcholine) is probably the best known
neurotransmitter, which is involved in muscle
stimulation.
what is synapse
Synapse is a gap in the terminal where the
neurotransmitter is passed from the neuron to
the next neuron of receptor.
what is the name given to the insulating coating around axons?
myelin sheath
what is the name of the cells that make up the myelin sheath coating around axons?
schwann cells
what are three responsibilities of the nervous system
senses
transmission of signals
causes an effect (muscle contraction)
what are the characteristics of a neuron
Extremely long cell that passes messages along the nervous
system (spine to toe).
Has a Cell Body with a Nucleus and other Organelles.
Have cell processes for increasing the distance for
conducting messages to and from the cell body.
what are the two distinct types of projections from the cell body
Short, branching dendrites, which transmit electrical signals
from other cells to the cell body.
Long axons, which carry electrical signals from the cell body
to other cells.
what are the three types of muscle tissue
skeletal eg. function in voluntary movement
smooth eg. controls involuntary movement
cardiac eg. makes up the walls of the heart
what are the stages of the muscular system
muscle group
muscle bundle
muscle cell
myofibril
what are two examples of supporting connective tissues
bone
cartlige
what are two examples of dense connective tissues
tendons
ligaments
what are two examples of fluid connective tissues
blood
lymph fluid
what is the example of loose connective tissue
adipose tissue
what are the four categories of connective tissue
loose connective
dense connective
supporting connective
fluid connective
what are the functions of connective tissue
bind structures together
support other tissues
defence
transport of important materials throughout the body
what are the four epithelial cell types
squamous
columnar
cuboidal
pseudostratified
what are the two criteria for classifying epithelial tissue
shape of the cells
number of cell layers
what is epithelial tissue
Diverse group of tissues that form a tight
and continuous layers covering on the
outside of the body, as well as lining the
surfaces of organs, and form glands inside
of the body.
what are the four types of tissue
epithelial tissue
connective tissue
muscle tissue
nervous tissue
