Animal Tissues Flashcards
The study of tissues and their structures.
Histology
A group of cells with similiar structures and functions.
Tissues
What are the four major types of animal tissues?
1) Epithelial 2) Connective 3) Muscle 4) Nervous
It covers external and internal surfaces throughout the body. The outer layer of the skin and found in the lining of cavities such as digestive tract, respiratory passages, blood vessels, etc.
Epithelial Tissues
What are the 2 classification of epithelial tissues based on layers?
Simple and Stratified
What are the classifications of epithelial tissues bases on shapes?
Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar
Consists of single layer of flat, often hexagonal cells that allow substance to pass by diffusion and osmosis. Located at the lining of blood vessels, alveoli of the lungs.
Simple Squamous
Consists of a single layer of cube shaped cells that secrete and absorb substances. Located at kidney tubule glands.
Simple Cuboidal
Consists of a single layer of tall, narrow cells that secrete and absorb substances and aid in the movement of particles. Located in the lungs, lining of stomach, intestines, gallbladder, etc.
Simple Columnar
Consists of a single layer of cells that synthesize and secrete mucus into the free surface. Located at the lining of nasal cavity, pharynx and trachea.
Pseudostratified columnar
Consists of several layers of cells that are cuboidal in the basal layer and progressively flattened towards the surface. Located at the outer layer of the skin.
Stratified Squamous
Characterize by large amounts of extracellular materials that separates cells from one another.
Connective Tissues
2 types of fibrous connective tissue?
Loose and Dense
2 types of supporting connective tissue?
Cartilage and Bone
Type of fluid connective tissue?
Blood
Made up of fibers that forms a lacy network.
Loose connective tissue
Consist of meshwork of collagen, elastic tissues and reticular fibers.
Areolar
Forms a scaffolding for other cells in several organs.
Reticular
Store energy in the form of lipids.
Adipose
Consists of relatively large amount of protein fibers.
Dense connective tissues
Found in the ear.
Cartilage
A hard connective tissue that consists of living cells.
Bone
A unique type of connective tissues because its matrix is liquid. Important in carrying nutrients throughout the body.
Blood
Attached to soft tissues or bone.
Muscle tissues
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal, Cardiac, and Smooth
Attached to a bone or other connective tissues and allows body to move.
Skeletal Muscle
Muscle of the heart. Responsible for pumping blood and under involuntary control.
Cardiac Muscle
Forms the walls of hollow organs, under involuntary control.
Smooth Muscle
Forms the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Nervous tissues
