Animal studies Flashcards
When did Lorenz study imprinting
1952
How many geese did lorenz study
12
Procedure of Lorenz
Half hatched with mum, first thing they saw was her and half hatched in an incubator and the first moving thing they saw was Lorenz
Behaviour then observed and recorded
Findings of Lorenz
Hatchlings became attached to the first moving things they saw
Grew up and were unable to recognise adult members of their own species and tried to mate with humans
The imprinting was irreversible
What was the critical period Lorenz identified
When imprinting needs to take place which depends on the species for geese it was a few hours and if imprinting does not occur in this time chicks do not attach themselves to a mother figure
How many monkeys did Harlow study
16
Finding of Harlow
Baby monkeys preferred the cloth mum and only went to the wire mum when they needed food
contact comfort more important than food
What happened to Harlows monkeys in adulthood
Monkeys reared with wire mum became dysfunctional
One reared with cloth mum were still aggressive and less sociable
As mothers they neglected their children and killed them
Limitations of Harlows study
Unethical - stress and lasting emotional harm - can be justified as there is a better understanding of attachment
Confounding variables - monkeys had different heads - lack of control - low internal validity
What type of monkey did Harlow study
Rhesus
