Animal Studies Flashcards
Lorenz aim
To observe the phenonimon of imprinting
Imprinting
Happens when different animals create an attachment to the first moving object they meet
Critical period
Shows imprinting can start occurring 1 hour after hatching although it’s strongest 12-17 hours after
Lorenz sexual imprinting
Birds who imprinted on humans would display courtship towards human behaviours. Peacocks showed courtship to turtles
Harlow aim
Wanted to investigate origins of love and show mother love wasn’t based upon feelings
Harlow procedure
8 monkeys studies for 165 days
4 monkey wire, 2 monkey cloth
Harlow findings
Most time spend was with cloth mother, when monkeys were scared they stayed with cloth mother. When monkeys got older they showed more aggressive behaviours such and looking after their own babies
Strengths of Lorenz research
Research support gives the study greater application. Regaloin - young animals are born with innate mechanisms to imprint on moving object during critical period.
Application, farmers use for orphaned lambs so can be cared for by adoptive mother
Accurate representation of how attachments work
Weakness of Lorenz
Poor generalisability to humans, hard to relate conclusions from birds to humans, excludes emotional attachment, not appropriate to generalise birds from humans
Positive Harlow
Good application to real world, helps physiologists understand how important bonding is, can maintain a figures in zoos and orphanages. Practical research
Weakness Harlow
Can’t generalise research from monkeys to humans
Unethical, animals don’t have the right to be researched, cloth and wire monkeys lack emotional attachments causing severe long term distress
