Tonka’s mom was shot and killed in Nevada while Tonka was in her mouth. He was hand raised for a few months as an illegal pet, later escaping to a park where the USFWS was notified and he was confiscated. Unreleasable due to human imprintation.

Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean, through
southwest and central Asia (including Afghanistan and Turkmenistan) to Pakistan, India, Nepal, China and Sri Lanka. In the Himalayan Mountains, they reach altitudes of up to 2,400 meters. Rocky hillsides, tropical and temperate shrub land, grasslands, forests, farm land, plantations, gardens.

He lived at the Buffalo Zoological Gardens, the San Diego Zoo, and an outreach facility before coming to us in 2008

Generalist herbivores, diet changes seasonally, consumes variety of plant matter. Winter- evergreen needles and inner bark of the tree, often feeding heavily off one tree and damaging/killing it. Spring and summer- berries, roots, seeds, grasses, leaves, and stems.

North America: Canada, Northeastern and Western United States, Northern Mexico. Coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forest habitats, grasslands, desert shrublands, and tundra

Forest was born into human care and lived at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo before he was donated to ATZ in 2014.

South-eastern United States from Texas to North Carolina. Freshwater wetlands such as marshes, slow-moving rivers, lakes and cypress swamps
What is Happy’s story
Former pet. Was found by a man in Florida and was kept in his bathtub and fed hamburger meat. The lack of sunlight and proper nutrients stunted his growth to six feet. He was confiscated and came to us in 1998.

Brought to America by Dr. Charles Townsend to help save the species. Has lived with San Diego Zoo, Houston Zoo, and LA Zoo before coming to live here in 2001.
