Animal Nutrition Research Flashcards
Steps of the Scientific Method
1) Make an observation
2) Review Literature and Create Hypothesis
3) Perform Experiment
4) Analyze Data and Report Results
What is observation?
the framework for the rest of the scientific method
What is a hypothesis?
a prediction about the relationship between variables
must be falsifiable
What is experimentation?
design study
conduct the study
What are analysis and reporting?
analysis varies widely
reporting in outlet with intended audience
What is epidemiologic study?
used to study complex interactions that exist among genetic, environmental factors.
no treatment, therefore unable to determine casual relationships
What is intervention study?
an experiment in which a treatment
requires everything not tested to be the same
What is a control?
no treatment given to control group
What is a placebo
fake treatment given to control group that cannot be distinguished from the actual treatment
What is a single blind study?
human experiment when participants do not know which treatment they are receiving
What is a double blind study?
human experiment where neither the particpants nor the scientists know to which treatments have been assigned
What is a confounding variable?
a factor that might influence the outcome of an experiment
provides alternate explanation for results
What is the hawthorne effect?
subjects change their behavior because they are under observation
What is a placebo effect?
apparent effect of the treatment because the individual believes it will work
What is a research bias?
researcher influences study results
