Anthrax
Gram positive spore forming bacteria. Found in hot weather with alkaline soils. Highly fatal septicemia.
Post mortem symptoms of Anthrax
Dead dont get stiff, dark blood out of nose and anus that doesn’t clot. DONT DO A POST MORTEM on em.
Spore diseases will greatly increase during what kind of years?
Very wet, or very dry
Most important thing to know for blackleg
Vaccinate
Clostridial infections
Blackleg, spore forming.
Two categories of clostridials
Those that invade the tissue of the host, those that live within the digestive system.
Cl. Chauvoei
Blackleg, affects cattle up to 3 years old, Fatal 12-48 hours later, multiplies in intestines,
Symptoms of blackleg
Gas bubbles under skin of dead, Dark spongy muscle when cut open, Rapid swelling.
Enterotoxemia
Overeating. 6 types found, 3 significant. Type C and D get cattle.
Type C Enterotoxemia
Calves under two weeks of age. Stop nursing.
What cattle should be vaccinated for Enterotoxima
All cattle going on full feed or small grain pasture should be vaccinated.
Tetanus
found in spores in soil, man feces and horse feces. Only get tetanus from injury or unsanitary vaccinations.
Redwater Disease
in the US along the gulf of mexico and in the mountains. Invades the liver. Liver flukes may be a factor. Water borne disease. Found in dirty water.
Lepto
Most cases are transmitted orally. Localizes in the kidneys. Infects the fetus. Abortion, fever, respiratory stuff. Shed disease in pee. Morbidity up to 75%
Anaplasmosis
Protazo, treatment of ticks decreases ability to spread. Most prevalent along the gulf and pacific coast. Transfered by biting insects needles and surgery.
symptoms of anaplasmosis
heart action is rapid and pounding. inclined to fight. They die by suffocation.
Texas Fever
Protazoa, ticks carry it. Bad in mexico and border.
Shipping Fever Complex are also known as
Bovine respiratory disease.
What attributes to Bovine respiratory disease
Stress, viruses, bacteria
Main viruses
IBR, BVD, BRSV and PI3
Main Bacteria troubles are from what?
Pasteurella multocida, Manymia Haemolytica, Haemophilus somnus and Mycoplasma
BRD symptoms
Loss of appetite, animal apart from herd, head down, dry cough, difficulty breathing.
Prevention of BRD
Lessen stress, buy healthy cattle, TREAT EARLY AND OFTEN.
IBR
Herpies disease also known as Red Nose. Muzzle peels and is red, Brought out by stress, Rapid loss of weight. Cheezy eyes, short incubation. Respiratory probs, abortions.
BVD
Breaks out 5 days after exposure. weakens immune system. PIs are the devil. Coughing, Diarrhea, depression. VACCINATE.
PI calves
shed the disease at large amounts. 80% come from first calf heifers.
PI3
Major causative agent in bovine respiratory disease.
BRSV
Head stuck out chin elevated. swells lungs. sufficates them. treat with banomine to help swelling.
Pasturella are refered to as what?
The real killers.
The real killers
Manhimia haemolytica, pasteurella multocida. Early treatment is a must to help prevent them.
Bovine Coccidiosis
Most common protozoal disease in the united states. Primarily young animals. Causes bloody scours. Rumenson helps prevent, stop and control.
Salmonellosis
Yellow diarrhea. Respiratory comes in after. Sanatation to help prevent.
Johne’s Disease
Bacterial disease, spread in feces of infected animals. Nutrients can no longer be absorbed into the blood. Bad diarrhea. Vaccine available.
Ways to prevent rabies
VACCINATE. Viral infection of central nervous system.
Listeriosis
“Circling disease” disease of central nervous system. will become paralysed until death. Give Penicillin for treatment.
Foot Rot
common disease between the toes of cattle. caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum.
How to prevent foot rot
Feed organic Iodine. Vaccination. Zinc in mineral.
What does Fusobacterium necrophorum cause?
foot rot, dipthera and liver abbesses.
What is lumpy jaw caused by?
a ray fungus that invades through opening in mucosa or skin.
Symptoms of Lumpy Jaw
Swelling and abcessation of jaw line.
Treatment of Lumpy Jaw
Feed organic iodine. Inject sodium iodide IV.
Woody tongue
Swelling of tongue and hardness. Difficulty breathing and eating. Feed Organic Iodine.
Tuberculosis
Chronic disease affecting man and animals. Big deal if you get it. eradicated from usa. Reportable disease.
Ringworm
Fungus that affects cattle and humans. Round scaly appearance.
Navel Ill
Postnatal through the umbilical cord. Umbilical abscesses.
Prevention of Navel Ill
have sanitary calving areas.
LD50
Lethal dose for 50% of population.
what are the signal words
Danger, Warning, caution.
Tolerance
the ability to carry on functions with little or no impairment with presents of chemical.
Resistance
The amount of the chemical that an animal can withstand before being eliminated by it.
Symptoms of poisonous plants on cattle
sudden onset, large number of animals, NO FEVER, rapid heart beat, Death without obvious cause.
Preventing losses to poisonous plants
Good management practices. avoid overgrazing, know plants, dont turn out hungry cattle.
Cocklebur
deathly poisonous at the 2 leaf stage.
Cocklebur symptoms
twitching, paralysis, lack of coordination.
Broom weed poisoning
loss of appetite, abortion.
How many parts per million of nitrate poisoning?
3000
more than how many parts per million of aphlotoxin is bad?
300 parts per billion.
Nitrate poisoning
caused at places that are highly fertilized. Johnson grass, Kochia, carelessweed.
Symptoms of nitrate poisoning
Respiratory distress, extreme apprehension, and weakness
Prussic acid
ingestion of sorghum family, causes death by inactivating respiratory enzymes. Stress on plants
Symptoms of prussic acid poisoning.
spasms and quick death, frothing at the mouth, will live if they survive 2 hours.
Sweet clover poisoning
Blood thinner and cattles blood will not clot, bleed to death.
Aflatoxins
poisonous molds
Symptoms of BRD
hacking cough fever, diahrrea, labored breathing.
How to tell BRSV from other viruses
Calves head is held out and extended with chin up.
Signs of coccidiosis
Bloody scours. Repiratory problems will follow. Immunosuppreser.
What is set up by?
Haemophilus Somnus
What is polio caused by?
High energy diets, distillers grain, by products of ethenol.
