Summary for chapter 3 and 4
All of the animals besides the pigs work tirelessly harvesting crops (pigs are supervising). They achieve better results than before. Sundays are days for rest, meetings and sing, “beasts of England”. The pigs have already taught themselves to read and write and are trying to teach the other animals. Computers such as the Clean Tails League for the cows are set up, but none are successful. Since the majority of the animals are unable to read and memorize the commandments, they are refused to a simple maxim’ “ four legs good, two legs bad”. Napoleon take nine puppies for private instruction and the pigs are now the only ones allowed to eat the apples and drink the milk produced on the farm. The pigs force the animals to accept this by reminding them of the threat of jones coming back to the farm. The song , “ Beasts Of England “ is now being hummed and sung over half the country, although no other farms have joined the rebellion. Armed with a shotgun, jones and sever men from the town attempt to recapture the farm, but snowball leads the animals successfully defending it. Medals for bravery are awarded to Snowball, Boxer and the sheep killed in the battle. Mr Jones’s gun is set up at the foot o the flagpole, and it will be fired on the anniversary of the Rebellion and the Newley named Battle of the cowshed
What further examples of the difference between the pigs and the other animals occur in these two chapters
The pigs don’t work, they ‘supervise’. They said that they were doing all the brain work. They got the benefit of getting all the milk and apples harvested on the farm. They say that they don’t actually like the apples and the milk, but they need to stay healthy, because if they were not healthy, they would not be able to function and that jones would come back. He thinks that teaching the grown animals is useless and a waste of time, but that. It would be more bennifitial to educate the children.
How is squealer able to get the animals to agree to anything that Napoleon wants
He uses a lot of rhetorical questions. He says that if they do not do what Napoleon say, jones will come back (fear) he doesn’t give the animals time to answer the rhetorical question, or to say their opinion. He uses false information. He has many personal one-on-one conversations with the animals. He scapegoats jones

He was in charge of the defensive operations. He was at the front of the second line of attack. He signaled the retreat of the animals. He gave the signal to charge. He was injured.

Why is it significant that jones’s gun was placed at the foot of the flagpole
The flagpole symbol Lisa their freedom over the humans during the rebellion. The gun symbolizes their victory over the humans at the Battle of The Cowshed. It is in a position where it can be used as a weapon if they were ever attacked again the gun could be fired two times a year, and on Lu the pigs are allowed to fire the gun. This is significant because, once again, it puts the pigs in a position of authority
