Animal Farm Ch1 Flashcards
Short summary chapter 1
12 y/o Major, Manor Farm’s prize-winning boar calls a meeting of all the animals to talk about the difficulty of their lives under man’s rule. He revealed his dream and prophesies a future rebellion of animals against man, teaching the animals a song called, “ Beasts Of England “.
What is significant about how the animals have arranged themselves
The animals are in groups. They are. They have segregated themselves. They are in small groups within the large groups. The animals are in a very strict arrangement.
What does the arrangement of the animals show us about future meetings
It shows us that the rest of the animals are equal, but the pigs are more powerful as they are seated at the front It shows that ultimately, the pigs are in control
According to Major, what is the cause of the animals’ problem
Major says that ‘man’ is the cause of all their problems. ( Mr. Jones )
What motto does Major give the animals
Whatever goes upon s two legs us an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
What are the seven commandments
- Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy
- Whatever goes upon four kegs or has wings is a friend
- No animal shall wear clothes
- No animal shall sleep in a bed
- No animal shall drink alcohol
- No animal shall kill another animal
- All animals are equal
How could the seven commandments all be considered vices
(Vice-fault/weakness)
- Man is essential. Animals can not do all the things that man can
- ||
- Mans’ need for luxury leads to a need for wealth which in turn makes the greedy
- ||
- When one is drunk, he/she doesn’t think straight and makes bad choices, because he/she is not thinking logically

What is the message of the song, ‘ Beasts of England ‘
With the rebellion would come freedom and independence. It gave the animals hope that good times would come once man was overthrown
To what needs and emotions does the song ‘ Beasts Of England ‘ appeal to
It appeals to their need for freedom, independence and equality. It sums up all of the goals and it appeals to the animals’ belief in sugar candy mountain and their need to go there when they die. It appeals to the emotions : hope and joy that something better will come with the rebellion. It also appeals to their anger towards the humans: they resent and fear the humans and they want to make sure that the humans do not rule forever.
