Animal Attachment - Lorenz Flashcards
Why is it useful to look at animal studies of attachment?
- More ethical to use animals than humans
- animals are similar to humans
Animals develop faster than humans so we can find information in a shorter period of time than humans
What does the word imprinting mean?
Imprinting: making yourself known to the baby at a critical or sensitive period of development to acquire certain behaviours.
What Is Lorenz procedure ?
Took a group of eggs and split the group in half.
One group were hatched alongside their mothers
One hatched in incubators and they first saw Lorenz after birth (sensitive period)
What are the findings of Lorenz ?
Conclusion
The incubator hatched geese followed Lorenz wherever he went
The mother hatched group followed the mother every where she went.
This is called imprinting = happened a few hours after hatching or at birth.
If this doesn’t occur during the critical period then there is no mother figure which they attach to.
Sexual imprinting? Lorenz and geese
The geese show courtship behaviour towards whatever species they imprint on.
Positives of Lorenz geese study?
Geese /gosling followed him and not their mother which proves imprinting
Came up with imprinting and critical period which helps is understand imprinting which will be useful to zoo keepers to attach to the animal.
The peacocks first exposed to tortoises where attached to them proving imprinting on the peacock
Negative of Lorenz animal study?
You can’t use this study for humans as humans are different to geese and the attachment system is different in both.= no extrapolation for humans
Ethics - used animals but no torture and is better then using humans
