Angiogram Flashcards
coronary arteries
The heart receives blood from the coronary arteries, which are branches of the aorta, the main artery in the body; these arteries deliver oxygen-rich blood directly to the heart muscle, allowing it to function properly.
two main coronary arteries
the two main coronary arteries, the right coronary artery (RCA) and the left coronary artery (LCA), branch off from the aorta close to the heart:
Right coronary artery (RCA)
Branches off from the right aortic sinus, just above the aortic valve. Supplies blood to the right atrium and right ventricle
Left anterior descending artery
Left anterior descending artery: Supplies blood to the front and part of the side of the left ventricle, to the top of the left ventricle, and to most of the wall between the ventricles. A blockage in this artery can lead to a fatal heart attack.
Left coronary artery (LCA)
Branches off from the left aortic sinus. Supplies blood to the left atrium and left ventricle. The LCA branches off into smaller arteries, including the left anterior descending artery and the circumflex artery:
Circumflex artery
Circumflex artery: Supplies blood to the side of the left ventricle, and in some cases, the lower and back portions of the left ventricle.
Conus branch
Right coronary artery (RCA)
The first branch of the RCA, which runs to the right ventricular outflow tract
Atrial branch
Right coronary artery (RCA)
Gives off the sinoatrial nodal artery in about half to three-quarters of hearts
Right marginal artery
Right coronary artery (RCA)
The largest ventricular branch, which runs down the right margin of the heart
Posterior interventricular artery
Right coronary artery (RCA)
Supplies the posterior one-third of the interventricular septum, the inferior surface of the right ventricle, and part of the inferior surface of the left ventricle
Right posterior descending artery
Right coronary artery (RCA)
A branch of the RCA that helps supply blood to the middle or septum of the heart
Atrioventricular nodal branch
Right coronary artery (RCA)
Present in 90% of individuals
